Professor Mulder teaches introductory and intermediate Spanish language, grammar courses and Introductory Latin American Culture and History. She loves seeing her students connect with the course material and begin to enter into cultural and linguistic fluency.

She has traveled with students to Puebla, Mexico, for a May Term course and recently studied in Malaga, Spain, during her sabbatical. She enjoys visiting museums in Chicago and Detroit with Hope students to see exhibitions of work by Latin American artists.

She serves as the faculty advisor of Hope Catholics, and has a great deal of interest in the churchÑÇÖÞÉ«°É™s history within the context of the Conquest. Her travels have taken her to many areas key to this history, including the great cathedrals and holy sites of Spain and Mexico. She is able to bring the global church into her classroom by sharing these experiences with her students and exploring the syncretic practices of Christians throughout the Spanish speaking world.

Professor Mulder, who is also proficient in Portuguese, has been teaching at Hope since 2005.

AREAS OF EXPERTISE

Professor Mulder has taught introductory and intermediate Spanish at the college level for over 20 years.

Her studies have focused on artistic and literary representations of underrepresented figures in Latin American history, most notably La Malinche.  She is also very interested in the influence of La Virgen de Guadalupe in Latin America and the United States.

Education

  • M.A., Latin American literature, Purdue University, 2002
  • B.A., Spanish and elementary education, Hope College, 1999

Outside the college

Community involvement is second nature to Professor Mulder. She is a lector and translator at her church and counsels parishioners who are newly engaged (the latter with her husband, Jack, who teaches philosophy at Hope). She serves as the president of the Corpus Christi school board and is the chair of the schoolÑÇÖÞÉ«°É™s Mission Effectiveness committee, bridging the gap between religious education at school and the domestic
churches of school families.

In her free time, she loves to spend time with her husband, Jack, their two kids, and their pup, Rosie.
